It’s that time again. The University of Minnesota Duluth will be handing out diplomas to undergraduates on Saturday, May 15. Graduate diplomas will be presented on Thursday, May 13. We still have a few openings at our Duluth Bed and Breakfast, and hope you’ll consider staying with us as you witness this important rite of passage.

Stay at our Lake Superior Bed and Breakfast as you celebrate this magnificent rite of passage.

We get our driver’s license at 16, vote at 18, and have our first drink at 21. Commencement is another rite of passage, and perhaps it is the most significant. It rewards years of hard work, not just by one person, but by a whole community of students. It marks the moment when young adults are expected to become productive members of society.

For parents and children, commencement marks a whole new phase of life. Enjoy this time together while you have it. Walk the beach by our Duluth Bed and Breakfast, share a meal, and talk.

The University of Minnesota Duluth is bringing great music to town for the New Music Festival, April 23 and 24, 2010. What a great excuse to come visit your UMD student and enjoy a couple of nights at our Duluth bed and breakfast.

Luna Nova New Music Ensemble from Tennessee is the highlight of The New Music Festival. Their multimedia presentation embraces a wide variety of styles that you are sure to find captivating. Luna Nova performs Friday, April 23 at 7:30 pm.

You’ll have ample time to reconnect with your UMD student on Saturday before the 7:30 Vocal Music Recital. Students and faculty unite to give voice to music written within the last 10 years. Look forward to the Midwest premiere of Jeremy Beck’s one-act opera, Review.

Our Duluth inn is located right on Lake Superior, in the Canal Park district of Duluth – just a few miles from the University of Minnesota. It’s easy to stroll out our door and walk for miles along the shore. Although we close to all the amenities of Duluth, our proximity to Lake Superior makes it seem like we’re a beach resort.

The Luna Nova New Music Ensemble takes place at Weber Hall, on the UMD campus. Tickets are available through UMD.

The Tweed Museum of Art, at the University of Minnesota Duluth, houses an outstanding collection of over 6,000 pieces of art from around the world. Prominent Duluth citizen George P. Tweed and his wife Alice collected art for over twenty years. It was thanks to the efforts of Mrs. Tweed, after the death of her husband, that the collection ultimately became the Tweed Museum of Art.

The Tweeds had a fondness for the work of French painter Jean-Francois Millet, and there are several Millets at the Tweed. His work is now considered to be some of the finest examples of the French Barbizon School, named for the small village outside Paris that inspired Millet and his peers.

Mark Twain also had a fondness for Jean-Francois Millet, and wrote a farce about him. Is He Dead? lay in obscurity until Berkeley professors rescued it and helped it find its way to Broadway in 2007.

This spring, enjoy the art of Millet and the entertaining Twain play about him at the University of Minnesota, Duluth. The art is already on display at the Tweed, and Is He Dead? will be at the Mainstage Theatre of the Marshall Performing Arts Center April 22 through May 1, 2010. It’s a good reason to head to our Duluth MN inn.

The Tweed Museum of Art is just a few miles from our Duluth bed and breakfast. If you are coming to town to see your student, check out the Tweed. Should be here at the end of April, you won’t want to miss Is He Dead?.

It’s Homecoming at the University of Minnesota, Duluth, October 14 – 17. Folks will be coming in from all over the state to celebrate their alma mater, and we hope to see some of you here at our Duluth inn. The Class of 1959 is having their 50th reunion, with many fun events planned, like the Vista Fleet Excursion harbor tour and lunch. And of course, UMN Bulldog fans will be out in force to support the game on Saturday.

With all the activity surrounding Homecoming, it can be easy to overlook an interesting event scheduled for Friday, October 16th. Actress Hilary Swank and director Mira Nair on Friday will be in Montague Hall 70 at 6:15pm to discuss their upcoming film, Amelia, based on the life of pioneer aviator Amelia Earhart. The event is sponsored by The New York Times and is to be a “live webcast”. It promises to be lively and fun.

We enjoy our proximity to the University of Minnesota, Duluth. It brings in many interesting people, from alumni to Hilary Swank and Mira Nair, and some of them even stay at our bed and breakfast on Lake Superior. When we are in the mood for sports, there are excellent sporting events. When we are in the mood for “culture”, there is always something interesting taking place on the UMD campus. Best of all, these events are open to the public. So “here here” for UMD!

Travelers come to Duluth for many reasons: business, holidays, and cultural activities are just a few. Each spring, the families of University of Minnesota, Duluth, graduates arrive to usher their grads from the Ivory Tower to the “Real World”. Consider staying at our Duluth Bed and Breakfast while you are in town for graduation this May. Our relaxing atmosphere will calm you no matter how many functions you need to attend, and our delicious breakfasts will sustain you throughout the longest of ceremonies.

Graduation marks a turning point in our lives, and is therefore a time that invites reflection. The waters of the world’s largest lake continuously lap upon the shores by our inn, offering a peaceful place to sit and think. Miles of beach adjacent to our bed and breakfast in Duluth MN summon our guests to take walks and remember the times when they strolled hand in hand on the beach with their grads, whose hands were once so much smaller than their own.

Consider a stay at our Duluth MN Bed and Breakfast while you are in town for graduation. We are sure that you will want to return again and again.
