Shipping Views

Saturday, January 30th, 2010

From April through December, there is interesting shipping traffic at our Duluth MN inn. It is amazing to be strolling the beach or sitting by a window and suddenly notice these fantastically large ships.

They are so very big. They are so very close.

It is a great reminder of how our goods travel about the globe. It is also great fun to witness. We reminisce about the ships during the January – April freeze, when the waters are impassable to shipping traffic.

See you in the spring, ships!

Quietly they slip by, then comes the crash of waves.

Resolve to Add Romance to 2010

Tuesday, January 5th, 2010

The New Year is upon us, and with that comes New Year’s Resolutions. Usually we top our lists with things like “lose weight” and “organize garage”; necessary, perhaps, but hardly exciting. To help keep on track with these resolutions, throw in one that’s truly enjoyable: romantic weekend with sweetie at Duluth inn.

Let’s face it, many of us are not motivated to do much at all when the days are short and the nights are long. But what if we were at a Lake Superior bed and breakfast? We’d don sweaters, hats and gortex and walk for miles and miles on the beach, hearing nothing but the wind, water and intrepid gulls.

After dark, we’d curl up in front of the fire and read a book from cover to cover. Or we’d get gussied up and head out for a great meal at one of the Duluth restaurants near the inn. In the morning, we’d either sleep late or head out to the beach again to stimulate the appetite before a tasty breakfast made by someone else (when was the last time that happened?).

So before you get too deeply into that garage project, take a moment to look at your calendar and book a couple of nights at our Duluth bed and breakfast. Start the New Year with your priorities in order.

Holidays on Lake Superior

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009

Our city really throws itself into the holidays, and so do we at our Lake Superior inn. We spend three days decorating the inn for the Christmas season, with two trees and strings of lights. It is hard not to feel all Christmassy when you arrive at the inn between Thanksgiving and New Years, and we like it that way.

Get into the holiday mood at our Lake Superior B&B.

This is the perfect place to stay when you come to Duluth to indulge in a little holiday shopping. It is our goal to help our guests leave holiday stress at the door of our Duluth bed and breakfast. Find a cozy chair next to a fireplace, curl up, and finish that knitting project in time for Christmas. Brace yourself for a day of shopping with a hearty breakfast prepared specially for you. Calm your nerves with a cup of tea after you return to the inn, parcels in hand. We are close to the downtown shops, making shopping excursions from the inn easy and convenient. (more…)

Rainbow on the Lake

Whether you walk along its shores or gaze at it from our deck or from the window of your room, we hope you will find it relaxing and rejuvenating.

Dine in private by Lake Superior

Before the decks are covered with winter snows, let’s take a moment to reflect on a glorious moment here at our Duluth inn. Look at this picture, taken here during warm weather. What if you could enjoy your morning coffee here? What if you could sit back and bask in the sun, listening to the gentle lapping of waves on the shore, just a stone’s throw away from where you sit? What if you could share this moment with your good spouse, your good friend, your grown child?

You can, here at our Lake Superior bed and breakfast. We are just minutes from the heart of Duluth, and walking distance to many great shops and restaurants, yet when we sit here drinking locally roasted coffee, we feel that nothing exists except the sky, the lake, and the beach that calls to us. We hope you’ll come experience this sensation for yourself.

Duluth Skyline Parkway

Duluth Skyline Parkway

Duluth Skyline Parkway

When I was a child, my family often piled into the car and headed off on a scenic drive. We would take in lovely landscape, stop for a few photos, and either dine in a charming town or picnic. It was not what I would call exciting, but it was always an enjoyable way to spend time together as a family and see something new.

The Duluth Skyline Parkway is one of several scenic routes that criss-cross Minnesota, and it is quite close to our Duluth lodging. It affords lovely views of our fair city, Lake Superior, and the surrounding land, and is a perfect way to pass a few hours on a chilly day. As you drive this Minnesota scenic parkway, you will find several good spots to stop and stretch your legs for a while, such as along the Willard Munger State Trail, or the North Shore State Trail. Enger Park and Tower is a lovely place to stop for a picnic. (more…)
