The Benefits of Traveling to Duluth Mid Week

Shouldn't you be here this week?

There are many benefits to traveling mid week. Everything is less crowded: museums, parks, roads, and our Duluth bed and breakfast. Be spontaneous, drop everything, and hit the road. You deserve a break.

The Tweed Museum of Art, at the University of Minnesota, has a new exhibit: You and Yours: Images of Family. The exhibit was created by historian and curator Laura Briggs, who delved into the museum archives to find pieces that deal with family. In addition, she brought in new pieces by artists whose work has not yet been displayed in Duluth.

The inspiration for the exhibit stems from the changing definition of family. Briggs has written that “as cultural definitions of marriage, childhood, motherhood, and paternity shift over time, so too do our ways of forming family and of picturing it. You and Yours: Images of Family presents classic images of family alongside contemporary artists’ explorations of this universal, yet often idealized, theme.” It’s a fascinating idea. (more…)

Duluth in December

One of the great advantages of our Lake Superior Bed and Breakfast is the location. We sit on a narrow strip of land that juts out into Lake Superior Bay, with miles of beach at our door. It can be easy to forget that we are actually steps away from the heart of downtown Duluth.

At this time of year, a couple of fun events remind us that civilization is close at hand. One is Bentleyville. Another is the Christmas City of the North Parade, which passed right by our Canal Park lodging a few weeks ago. Glensheen Manor, not far up the coast, is all decorated for the holidays, making tours more festive. The manor is also presenting O’Henry’s classic “The Gift of the Magi” on Friday, December 18 and Saturday, December 19 (7 PM). A tour and refreshments are included. (more…)

Wednesday Night Concerts by the Lake in Duluth

July 1 marks the start of the “Concerts by the Lake” series, a free outdoor musical event at Glensheen Manor. Music by the shores of Lake Superior starts at 7:30 pm. Dance, or bring a blanket and relax with a picnic while enjoying the view and the music of The Jim Melde Big Band. Guests at our Duluth Bed and Breakfast always enjoy this event, which is just up the lake from us.
