Duluth Homegrown Music Festival

Friday, April 23rd, 2010

May 2 – 9, 2010, is the annual Homegrown Music Festival in Duluth. In the eleven years since it’s inception, the Homegrown Music Festival has grown into a full scale good time. Over 100 bands are expected to perform this year. The music is “rawk and/or roll devil music”, which I think means fun.

These days, the festival is not just about music. There will be photography, homegrown videos, and poetry. Expect to laugh at comedians, and watch some renegade theater. In fact, expect the unexpected.

Performances will be at dozens of restaurants, cafes and bars around town. You’ll be able to walk to several venues from our Bed and Breakfast Duluth, such as Fitger’s Brewhouse, R.T. Quinlan’s Saloon, Amazing Grace Bakery and Cafe, and Lake Avenue Cafe.

Check into our Duluth bed and breakfast from May 2 – 9, and check out the great homegrown music scene of Duluth.

A Night Out in Duluth

When was the last time you attended the symphony?

Spend Saturday evening, April 17, 2010, in Duluth, soaking up the music of Vivaldi, Debussy and Elgar. The first takes you on an uplifting romp through The Four Seasons; Debussy counters with his colorful Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun; finally, Elgar treats his audience to the mysterious Enigma Variations – fourteen “tongue-in-cheek musical depictions of his friends” that will make your mood merry.

The Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra is located at 350 Harbor Drive, approximately one mile from our Lake Superior inn. Director Markand Thakar has gained accolades for his innovative programming, as the performance on April 17 wonderfully demonstrates.

The weather should be more mild by mid-April than it is now. You may find yourself wanting to stroll along the shore of Duluth Harbor Basin to reach the DECC Auditorium, home of the Duluth Symphony.

There are several excellent dining options close to our Lake Superior bed and breakfast and the DECC. Both Bellisio’s and Valentini’s Vicino serve outstanding Italian food at a leisurely pace. Enjoy breathtaking views of the lake with your meal at Top of the Harbor. Pickwick, a Duluth staple for four generations, serves great food in a warm, comfortable atmosphere.

Welcome spring back into your lives with a weekend at our Duluth bed and breakfast, an excellent dinner out, and a night at the symphony.

Lake Superior, in Frozen Glory

Thursday, February 4th, 2010

January to April can be one of the most beautiful times of year here at our Duluth b&b. It’s because of the ice. Lake Superior and the harbor freeze over with chunky icebergs. They shift as the temperatures rise and fall. Looking out the window is like looking on a great work of art.

Come watch the ice shift in front of our Duluth inn.

Indeed, winter is a contemplative time here on the shores of Lake Superior. It is a time to bundle up and pick your way along the shore. At night, when skies are clear, the clarity of the stars is amazing. We find ourselves appreciating small things, like a warm cup of tea between our hands, a hot fire in the hearth, and a good conversation.

It’s also a time to indulge in comfort foods. We have fun creating satisfying, hearty breakfasts at our bed and breakfast MN during the winter. The kitchen is cozy and sparks creativity. And it is so satisfying to bite into something warm and freshly baked.

Our guests enjoy eating their way through many Duluth restaurants during their stay. Some are drawn to the creamy, aromatic foods at India Palace, just a few blocks from our MN inn. Winter is the best time to drink buckets of Chai! Other guests love to unwind at nearby Fitger’s Brewery, where there is almost always live music.

So come stay at our inn and watch the ice shift on Lake Superior. It’s fun.
