Lake Superior Railroad Museum

Lake Superior Railroad Museum

The railroad was an important part of the history of Lake Superior and Duluth, and the Lake Superior Railroad Museum is a great place to learn about that history. The museum is quite near our Duluth MN bed and breakfast, so if you have some time and are interested in this, we encourage you to visit the LSRM.

Scenic railroad rides are a great way to sit back and absorb the beauty of Lake Superior, Duluth, and Northern Minnesota. The regular autumn runs of the Lester River Train, the Two Harbors Train and the Pizza Train are Fridays – Sundays through October 17th. If you are already planning to stay with us during that time, you might find one of these trips to be an interesting addition to your itinerary.

There are a few special runs this fall, as well. There is a Fall Colors ride to historic Two Harbors, Minnesota on the Soo Line 2719. It takes four hours to travel up the coast and back to Duluth, and you are given two hours to explore Two Harbors. There is also a special Saturday evening ride on the Lake of the Isles dining car. Chefs from the finest restaurants in the area prepare delicious meals, and guests dine in elegance while enjoying the beautiful scenery of the Lakefront Line. The next Dinner train runs October 9th, 2009, at 5:30pm. Now is also the perfect time to plan ahead for the Polar Express run in November. Please refer to the North Shore Scenic Railroad website for details.

We always enjoy hearing about the great adventures of our guests. Of course, sometimes the perfect getaway involves nothing more than finding a home away from home – a place to rest and recuperate from the daily grind. We hope you will find just that at our bed and breakfast Duluth MN, where it is possible to spend hours serenely gazing at Lake Superior from the comfort of your own room, and where miles of beach beckon from the back door.

A Relaxing Midweek Stay At Our Duluth B&B

Red wine

Have a glass of wine at Bellisio's

Sometimes, the perfect trip is a spontaneous night or two away from the routine during the week. There are often midweek specials at our Duluth B&B, making such an escape all the more appealing. Restaurants are often less crowded during the week, bike and foot trails have fewer people on them, and it is easier to find a boat or bike to rent. In short, there are too many advantages to not consider having a weekend getaway at a Canal Park Inn during the week.

The Lakewalk is a scenic paved boardwalk that passes close to our Canal Park Inn. It is a great place to stretch your legs with a walk or a run, or to ride a bike without having to worry about cars. Along the way, there are many good spots to stop, rest, and take in the majestic sight of Lake Superior – where there is usually interesting shipping traffic, and waterfowl abound. Be sure to start your day with a filling, nutritious breakfast at our Duluth MN bed and breakfast before heading out for a day of exercise.

Some people like nothing better than an elegant dinner after a day of fresh air. If this is you, perhaps you’ll want to dine at Bellisio’s Italian Restaurant. Restore yourself with pasta, meat, or salad, and be assured that your server will help you select the perfect wine to accompany your meal. With over 125 wines by the glass, a wine cellar housing over 4,000 bottles, and an incredibly knowledgeable staff, we feel certain that you will be delighted.

Other folks think beer is the only drink to follow a day of physical activity out-of-doors. For you, we recommend Fitger’s Brewhouse, Brewery and Grille, located close to our Duluth Minnesota bed and breakfast. With seasonally appropriate brews on tap and live music most days of the week, it is a great place to relax and be restored.

After a night or two away during the week, you’ll head home ready to work and tackle projects. We look forward to seeing you.

Two Harbors Kayak Festival

Stay here during the Two Harbors Kayak Festival

Stay here during the Two Harbors Kayak Festival

The Aerial Bridge Suite at our Lake Superior Bed and Breakfast is still available during the Two Harbors Kayak Festival, which runs August 7 – 9, 2009. Kayaking enthusiasts from all over the country and the world attend this event, now in its twelfth year. There is something for every paddler during this weekend, from classes for novices to advanced clinics. And of course, there are the races.

More than one record has been set during the 18 Mile Great River Energy (GRE) Kayak Marathon over the years. But don’t let that intimidate you or keep you away from all the fun. If you don’t feel up to paddling 18 miles, consider participating in the EMMA Challenge Tandem Sprint Racing, on Sunday August 9th. Teams consist of everything from two adult men to two big kids. In short, times will widely vary, and the point is to paddle your heart out and have fun.

Two Harbors is less than 30 miles up the coast of Lake Superior from our Duluth MN Bed and Breakfast – a piece of cake for long-distance paddlers, and an even easier drive. We promise to provide you with a tasty and filling breakfast made from as many local ingredients as we can find. Early August is a good time for berries, so bring your appetite as well as your kayak. We look forward to hosting you.

Kayak from our Duluth Bed and Breakfast

Sunset Kayaking at Jim Hall Lake

Sunset in a kayak

There are many perks to living on Lake Superior. We watch huge ships go by, looking like floating islands. We are lulled to sleep by the sound of water gently lapping on shore. Seabirds abound, waking us in the morning with their enthusiastic calls. Sunrises and sunsets are amazing to behold from our home at this Duluth Minnesota inn.

Living on the water is also convenient for small craft boating, such as kayaking or canoeing. When we want to go for a paddle, we simple drag the boat a short distance to the water’s edge and away we go. We encourage our guests to bring their own kayaks/canoes, but if you don’t have one and would still like to get out on the water, we recommend Positive Energy Outdoor (Ed)ventures. They will lead you on an adventure right from the back yard of our Duluth bed and breakfast. With over thirty years experience in the field of outdoor education, the owners of this business emphasize safety while having fun.

Wake up at this Duluth MN bed and breakfast and watch the sunrise over Lake Superior. We will feed you a tasty, nutritious breakfast made with fresh, local ingredients, and locally roasted coffee. Then you can head out our back door and have a great adventure, returning later to soak in a hot tub and enjoy a drink on the porch. Now that is a vacation worth having.

Mother’s Day at our Duluth Bed and Breakfast

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

Does the Mother in your life know how much you appreciate her? Whether she is your own mother or the mother of your children, she deserves a little appreciation. It is not too late to whisk her away for the weekend to Solglimt, our bed and breakfast in Duluth MN.

If she likes the outdoors, there are seven miles of sandy beach to wander just steps away from this Duluth MN bed and breakfast. Bring your kayaks and paddle through Saint Louis and Superior Bays. If she prefers to have the wind do the work for her, then look into Carriage House Charters Sailboat Rides; the captain will provide a little history of the region while you sail on Lake Superior and St. Louis Bay.

Should she prefer strolling through the corridors of museums to outdoor activities, visit Fairlawn Mansion Museum in Superior. Built in 1890, this 42 room restored mansion recalls Superior’s boomtown days. Fitger’s Museum in Duluth reveals what beer was like in 1859, back when Fitger’s was the most successful brewery in the state.

On Mother’s Day, we will provide a delicious, homemade breakfast. And when it comes time for dinner, we would be happy to recommend some of our favorite restaurants for an evening out in Duluth. We think we have the best location in all of Duluth, almost floating on Lake Superior, but close to downtown as well. So come this weekend, and bring your favorite mother.

Duluth Minnesota Inn: Duluth Opera Festival

Friday, February 27th, 2009

For four years the Duluth Opera Festival has been providing Minnesota music lovers with top-quality classical performances. These opera presentations are performed in collaboration with the Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra. This festival has won numerous awards, including the Depot Foundation’s 2008 Community Cultural Enrichment Award. This would be a wonderful way to spend a winter evening while staying at our Minnesota Bed and Breakfast!

This weekend there will be a performance of Dido & Aeneas, which is sometimes called “the greatest Opera ever written in the English language”. The English baroque opera will be presented with the outstanding string players from the MacPhail String Ensemble of Minneapolis and the choral singers of Sonomento, joined by a cast of professional soloists that is sure to be an intensely emotional performance. Opera has always been a timeless musical style, that can bring you into the deepest levels of human emotion.

The 30-year-old composer Henry Purcell, considered to be the greatest English composer of any era, completed this dramatic piece in 1689. It is considered the first English opera ever written and was premiered at the Chelsea girl’s school in London. Based on the Fourth Book of the Aeneid, it tells of the tragic and touching love affair between Aeneas, hero of the Trojan wars and the beautiful Dido, Queen of Carthage.

This exciting and unique performance is just one example of the social and cultural events that take place here in Duluth year-round.

For example, take advatage of a list mintue deal for this weekend at our Duluth MN Bed a Breakfast! You can stay in Kandinsky’s Loft for only $123/night this weekend! We hope to see you soon!
