Homecoming at UMD

UMD

Will you fill the stands at the UMD Homecoming game this weekend?

It’s Homecoming at the University of Minnesota, Duluth, October 14 – 17. Folks will be coming in from all over the state to celebrate their alma mater, and we hope to see some of you here at our Duluth inn. The Class of 1959 is having their 50th reunion, with many fun events planned, like the Vista Fleet Excursion harbor tour and lunch. And of course, UMN Bulldog fans will be out in force to support the game on Saturday.

With all the activity surrounding Homecoming, it can be easy to overlook an interesting event scheduled for Friday, October 16th. Actress Hilary Swank and director Mira Nair on Friday will be in Montague Hall 70 at 6:15pm to discuss their upcoming film, Amelia, based on the life of pioneer aviator Amelia Earhart. The event is sponsored by The New York Times and is to be a “live webcast”.  It promises to be lively and fun.

We enjoy our proximity to the University of Minnesota, Duluth. It brings in many interesting people, from alumni to Hilary Swank and Mira Nair, and some of them even stay at our bed and breakfast on Lake Superior. When we are in the mood for sports, there are excellent sporting events. When we are in the mood for “culture”, there is always something interesting taking place on the UMD campus. Best of all, these events are open to the public. So “here here” for UMD!

Dine in private by Lake Superior

Before the decks are covered with winter snows, let’s take a moment to reflect on a glorious moment here at our Duluth inn. Look at this picture, taken here during warm weather. What if you could enjoy your morning coffee here? What if you could sit back and bask in the sun, listening to the gentle lapping of waves on the shore, just a stone’s throw away from where you sit? What if you could share this moment with your good spouse, your good friend, your grown child?

You can, here at our Lake Superior bed and breakfast. We are just minutes from the heart of Duluth, and walking distance to many great shops and restaurants, yet when we sit here drinking locally roasted coffee, we feel that nothing exists except the sky, the lake, and the beach that calls to us. We hope you’ll come experience this sensation for yourself.

The Woman Today iMag Features Our Duluth Inn

Friday, June 19th, 2009

We are honored to have been recently featured in The Woman Today, an online magazine. The article discusses the transformation of Solglimt from our family home to our family business, and the renovations we have recently completed.

Our home was built as a two-room cabin in 1910. It wasn’t much bigger when we purchased it 31 years ago, but we fell in love with its location on Park Point, by Lake Superior. Our growing three children inspired us to add-on to our home when we could, and once they moved out to start their own lives, we had a pretty good-sized house on our hands.

We decided to share our fabulous location with other folks, and 8 years ago we turned our house into this Canal Park MN bed and breakfast. We haven’t regretted a minute of it. In fact, we recently completed renovations so that we could welcome even more guests, and provide them with views of Lake Superior and the Canal. The Aerial Lift Bridge Suite and the Park Point Suite were built green,  encompassing as many environmentally friendly aspects as we could; perhaps the most fun aspect of the new building is the roof, which will eventually be made of sod.

We hope you will read the article, which can be found at The Woman Today. Being interviewed for it was fun for us – it brought up a lot of memories, and reminded us how far we have come. This has been a labor of love from the beginning, and we look forward to a long career as innkeepers of our new and improved Duluth bed and breakfast.
