Enjoy the beach by our Canal Point Inn.

Park Point Trail was created by the WPA in the 1930s. The park features a boat launch, volley ball courts, a beach, and a picnic area; the trail leads two miles to the tip of Park Point and back. This is a wonderful place to enjoy a picnic while you are staying at our bed and breakfast Duluth. While on the hike, look for remnants of old growth forest and old cabins built by early settlers. Be sure to bring binoculars if you enjoy birdwatching, for it is one of the best spots for seeing birds in the area.

Take kayaks from our beach and paddle out to Park Point, where you may stop and rest for a spell. Or ride bikes out to Park Point for an afternoon. Our Lake Superior inn is conveniently located to the shops and restaurants of Canal Park and downtown Duluth, as well as opportunities for outdoor recreation, so once you park your car at the inn, you may find you don’t need it until it is time to depart. After a day of fresh air on Park Point or lounging on the beach by the inn, let us recommend a restaurant within walking distance.

Check out the Bayfront Blues Festival while staying at our Duluth b&b.

There will be two music venues at the festival: the Acoustic Tent Stage and the Leinenkugel’s Stage. Bring a lawn chair and settle in for a show by the Cornbread Harris Trio or Reverend Raven and the Chainsmokin’ Altar Boys at the Acoustic Tent, or Otis Clay or JJ Grey & Mofro at Leinenkugel’s. Since Bayfront is so close to our Duluth bed and breakfast, you’ll be able to easily return to the inn to rest a bit between shows.

Rest assured, you won’t starve at the Blues Festival. Feast on Famous Dave’s barbecue, Rampagin’ Cajun fare, bratwurst, or gyros. Round out your meal with cheese curds or curly fries, and for desert, try a smore on a stick.  In short, you’ll find all the food you love to eat (but don’t due to health reasons). Have fun with it during the Blues Festival.

The Lake Superior Dragon Boat Festival

Teams of 25 people man the beautiful boats: one manager, one drummer, one steersperson, 2 alternates, and 20 paddlers. These are heavy boats, but they are moved with a lot of power. It is exhilarating to hear the drums beating and watch the intense concentration of the paddlers as they glide over the water. The enthusiasm is contagious.

In addition to the dragon boat races, there will be live music and numerous food vendors. On Friday night, the entertainment begins with Brandon Scott Sellnar, who is followed by the Lamont Cranston Blues Band. Saturday night enjoy the picking and strumming of Two Many Banjos. Throughout the day Saturday there will be more bands, dance groups and even magicians.

This is a great fund raising event sponsored by the Harbortown, Superior, and Superior Sunrise Centennial Rotaries. We welcome participants and spectators alike at our Duluth bed and breakfast on Lake Superior.

Golf in Duluth.

It really is. What a wonderful way for folks to get outside, exercise, and play a game. You can golf against yourself or against others. You can golf any day of the week, in just about any weather (excepting snow). You can travel the world with your golf clubs in tow.

There is wonderful golf near our Duluth bed and breakfast. Folks who have played Lester Park or Enger Park Golf Courses in Duluth will rave about them. They both offer 27 holes that can be played by players of all levels. Play a short game during your Duluth vacation and still have plenty of time to explore other aspects of Duluth. Or play a long game and take time to admire spectacular views of Duluth and Lake Superior. You can schedule a tee time up to seven days in advance, or spontaneously walk-in. Golf club rentals are available.

Imagine this: your day starts watching Lake Superior glow with the sun rise, from the window of your room in our bed and breakfast Duluth or during a morning stroll on the beach. Prepare for the day with a meal of fresh fruit, freshly baked goods, and freshly brewed coffee from our favorite local roaster – you are welcome to dine on our patio.

After an invigorating round of golf, return to our Duluth b&b for a little rest – perhaps a soak in a jetted tub or a nap. Then have a pleasant stroll to the shops and restaurants of nearby Canal Park, or borrow one of our kayaks and paddle along the coast. You’ll happily collapse into a comfortable bed once night falls, ready for another great day in Duluth.

The following ships are scheduled to arrive July 28, 2010: U.S. Brig Niagara, Barque EUROPA, HMS Bounty, Pride of Baltimore II, Roald Amundsen, ZEETO, S/V Denis Sullivan, Roseway, Freedom Schooner Amistad. Additional vessels may also arrive. The ships will be in Duluth until August 3. Have we said we can’t wait?

In addition to enjoying incredible views of the ships when under sail, guests of our Duluth bed and breakfast will also be quite close to the center of Tall Ship activity – we can walk to Bayfront Festival Park and Harbor Drive behind the DECC from the inn. Guests may easily stroll down to enjoy live music, stagings of the Pirates of Penzance, and ship tours.

We look forward to welcoming guests when the Tall Ships come to Duluth July 28 – August 3, 2010. We look forward to meals on the deck while watching the ships. We can’t wait to walk to the park to get close to them. What a festive occasion!

The USAF Thunderbirds to be at the 2010 Duluth Air Show.

There are many exciting exhibitions and performances scheduled throughout the weekend. The theme for the 2010 Duluth Air Show is Generations, meaning the focus will be on past and present aircraft, as well as past and present American men and women in uniform. View wonderful vintage aircraft alongside some of the most current designs in modern aviation and space exploration.

Headlining the air shows will be USAF Thunderbirds and Tora Tora Tora. The 148th Fighter Wing and the Canadian Forces Skyhawks will also perform, along with many other fine aviators and aircraft. Anyone who enjoys seeing spectacular flying will be thrilled by the line-up.

Back at our bed and breakfast Duluth, we’ll be enjoying views of Lake Superior, beach walks, and good food.When you’ve had enough of flying machines, we’ll welcome you back here.

Our Duluth Minnesota bed and breakfast benefits from a fantastic location (if we do say so ourselves). Actually, the location is what first attracted us to this home, so many years ago. We loved that seven miles of sandy beach was steps away, and that we could walk to all the amenities of Canal Park. I guess that’s why we’re still here.

Nine years ago, we decided to share our special spot with other people. As innkeepers of a Lake Superior bed and breakfast, we meet people from all over the world. We love to welcome people into our home, and tell them about our home town. In fact, we never tire of it. We’ve just celebrate our 9th Anniversary as innkeepers here at Solglimt, and we look forward to many more years to come.

We invite you to spend some time on our deck, watching the sunlight dance on the water. Walk along the beach, or simply stretch out on the sand and gaze at the phenomenal Aerial Lift Bridge. When you are ready to engage with civilization, walk to Canal Park or downtown Duluth; we’ll happily recommend good restaurants if you like.

We believe Duluth is a special place, and hope you’ll come see it for yourselves this summer.

Shouldn't you be here this week?

There are many benefits to traveling mid week. Everything is less crowded: museums, parks, roads, and our Duluth bed and breakfast. Be spontaneous, drop everything, and hit the road. You deserve a break.

The Tweed Museum of Art, at the University of Minnesota, has a new exhibit: You and Yours: Images of Family. The exhibit was created by historian and curator Laura Briggs, who delved into the museum archives to find pieces that deal with family. In addition, she brought in new pieces by artists whose work has not yet been displayed in Duluth.

The inspiration for the exhibit stems from the changing definition of family. Briggs has written that “as cultural definitions of marriage, childhood, motherhood, and paternity shift over time, so too do our ways of forming family and of picturing it. You and Yours: Images of Family presents classic images of family alongside contemporary artists’ explorations of this universal, yet often idealized, theme.” It’s a fascinating idea.

Live music happens during the week, too. There is a great concert series at Chester Creek on Tuesday nights. Chester Bowl is located at 1800 East Skyline Parkway, which is just a few miles from our bed and breakfast Duluth. The Chester Bowl is a beautiful setting to hear outdoor music. Concerts are from 7 – 8:30 pm. Another great opportunity to hear live music out of doors takes place Wednesday evenings during July at Glensheen Manor; the Jim Melde Big Band sets toes a tapping starting at 7:30 pm. The music is grand and the view lovely.

Don’t hesitate. Throw your bag in the car and head to Duluth, on the shores of Lake Superior. If nothing else, spend a day walking on miles of beach or paddling along the coast in one of our kayaks.
