The Symphony performs at the DECC Auditorium, which is located just over a mile from our bed and breakfast Duluth. Leave your car at the inn, walk to dinner in Canal Park, and then continue on foot to the Symphony. The return walk after the show will be a delightful opportunity to stretch your legs and star gaze.

If you are staying at our bed and breakfast Duluth September 25, 2010, you may enjoy an evening of Sensational Tchaikovsky, which also features compositions by Russian Composer Glinka and Mozart. Markand Thakar conducts, and famed clarinetist Richard Stoltzman plays Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto.

If you plan to be in Duluth on October 16, 2010, consider an evening of Surprising Tangos. Markand Thakar conducts the Duluth Superior Symphony and Lidia Kaminska performs Piazzolla Three Tangos on the accordion. Also on the program are Blue Danube Waltzes by J. Strauss and Symphonie Fantastique by Berlioz. You may be inspired to go out dancing afterward.

Later this fall, on October 30, the Duluth Superior Symphony takes on the work of John Williams. Listeners will be transported back in time as they listen to scores from films such as Star Wars, E.T., and Harry Potter. It is sure to be a fun evening.

Guests of our Duluth bed and breakfast this weekend  are in luck. The Duluth Lakefront Festival takes place just steps from our door in Canal Park, and stretches almost fifty blocks up the lake to Kelso Park, at 47th Avenue East. This is a perfect excuse to put on some solid walking shoes and spend a few hours stretching your legs by the lake. If you are in town to participate in one of the numerous races throughout the weekend (such as the Minnesota Mile or Grandma’s Marathon), you’ll be thankful you won’t have far to travel after your race.

A host of fun activities will be offered for people of all ages. Friday evening (Sept 10, 2010), a tribute to 9/11 will be held at Leif Erickson Park. It will be followed by an outdoor screening of The Wizard of Oz. Spectators are encouraged to dress as their favorite character and enter the costume contest. After the film, stretch your legs with a leisurely stroll back to our Lake Superior lodging.

Saturday morning we’ll feed you well, with fresh fruits, locally brewed coffee, and a sinfully good main plate; you’ll have plenty of energy for whatever the day holds for you. Perhaps you’ll take part in Treasure Quest between Canal Park and Fitzger’s, which is guaranteed to expand your knowledge of the Lakewalk. If you tire, the North Shore Scenic Railroad is offering free rides.

The best part of the Duluth Lakefront Festival is simply the festive atmosphere it creates. It is great to see people out and about, enjoying the expansive Lake Superior waterfront. Whenever you wish a reprieve from the crowds, just come back to Solglimt. Sit on our deck and gaze out at the water, soak in the tub, or curl up in front of the fire. The weekend is yours.

Check out the Bayfront Blues Festival while staying at our Duluth b&b.

There will be two music venues at the festival: the Acoustic Tent Stage and the Leinenkugel’s Stage. Bring a lawn chair and settle in for a show by the Cornbread Harris Trio or Reverend Raven and the Chainsmokin’ Altar Boys at the Acoustic Tent, or Otis Clay or JJ Grey & Mofro at Leinenkugel’s. Since Bayfront is so close to our Duluth bed and breakfast, you’ll be able to easily return to the inn to rest a bit between shows.

Rest assured, you won’t starve at the Blues Festival. Feast on Famous Dave’s barbecue, Rampagin’ Cajun fare, bratwurst, or gyros. Round out your meal with cheese curds or curly fries, and for desert, try a smore on a stick.  In short, you’ll find all the food you love to eat (but don’t due to health reasons). Have fun with it during the Blues Festival.

The Lake Superior Dragon Boat Festival

Teams of 25 people man the beautiful boats: one manager, one drummer, one steersperson, 2 alternates, and 20 paddlers. These are heavy boats, but they are moved with a lot of power. It is exhilarating to hear the drums beating and watch the intense concentration of the paddlers as they glide over the water. The enthusiasm is contagious.

In addition to the dragon boat races, there will be live music and numerous food vendors. On Friday night, the entertainment begins with Brandon Scott Sellnar, who is followed by the Lamont Cranston Blues Band. Saturday night enjoy the picking and strumming of Two Many Banjos. Throughout the day Saturday there will be more bands, dance groups and even magicians.

This is a great fund raising event sponsored by the Harbortown, Superior, and Superior Sunrise Centennial Rotaries. We welcome participants and spectators alike at our Duluth bed and breakfast on Lake Superior.

There are many exciting exhibitions and performances scheduled throughout the weekend. The theme for the 2010 Duluth Air Show is Generations, meaning the focus will be on past and present aircraft, as well as past and present American men and women in uniform. View wonderful vintage aircraft alongside some of the most current designs in modern aviation and space exploration.

Headlining the air shows will be USAF Thunderbirds and Tora Tora Tora. The 148th Fighter Wing and the Canadian Forces Skyhawks will also perform, along with many other fine aviators and aircraft. Anyone who enjoys seeing spectacular flying will be thrilled by the line-up.

Back at our bed and breakfast Duluth, we’ll be enjoying views of Lake Superior, beach walks, and good food.When you’ve had enough of flying machines, we’ll welcome you back here.

These days, the festival is not just about music. There will be photography, homegrown videos, and poetry. Expect to laugh at comedians, and watch some renegade theater. In fact, expect the unexpected.

Performances will be at dozens of restaurants, cafes and bars around town. You’ll be able to walk to several venues from our Bed and Breakfast Duluth, such as Fitger’s Brewhouse, R.T. Quinlan’s Saloon, Amazing Grace Bakery and Cafe, and Lake Avenue Cafe.

Luna Nova New Music Ensemble from Tennessee is the highlight of The New Music Festival. Their multimedia presentation embraces a wide variety of styles that you are sure to find captivating. Luna Nova performs Friday, April 23 at 7:30 pm.

You’ll have ample time to reconnect with your UMD student on Saturday before the 7:30 Vocal Music Recital. Students and faculty unite to give voice to music written within the last 10 years. Look forward to the Midwest premiere of Jeremy Beck’s one-act opera, Review.

Our Duluth inn is located right on Lake Superior, in the Canal Park district of Duluth – just a few miles from the University of Minnesota. It’s easy to stroll out our door and walk for miles along the shore. Although we close to all the amenities of Duluth, our proximity to Lake Superior makes it seem like we’re a beach resort.

Spend Saturday evening, April 17, 2010, in Duluth, soaking up the music of Vivaldi, Debussy and Elgar. The first takes you on an uplifting romp through The Four Seasons; Debussy counters with his colorful Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun; finally, Elgar treats his audience to the mysterious Enigma Variations – fourteen “tongue-in-cheek musical depictions of his friends” that will make your mood merry.

The Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra is located at 350 Harbor Drive, approximately one mile from our Lake Superior inn. Director Markand Thakar has gained accolades for his innovative programming, as the performance on April 17 wonderfully demonstrates.

The weather should be more mild by mid-April than it is now. You may find yourself wanting to stroll along the shore of Duluth Harbor Basin to reach the DECC Auditorium, home of the Duluth Symphony.

There are several excellent dining options close to our Lake Superior bed and breakfast and the DECC. Both Bellisio’s and Valentini’s Vicino serve outstanding Italian food at a leisurely pace. Enjoy breathtaking views of the lake with your meal at Top of the Harbor. Pickwick, a Duluth staple for four generations, serves great food in a warm, comfortable atmosphere.
