Duluth’s Park Point Trail

Tuesday, August 17th, 2010

Our Duluth bed and breakfast sits on the longest fresh water sand bar in the world – Park Point (or Minnesota Point) is 7 miles long and Wisconsin Point, on the other side of the aerial lift bridge, spans 3 miles. It is incredible to spend time out in the middle of this narrow strip of land, where it can feel like you are floating on Lake Superior.

Enjoy the beach by our Canal Point Inn.

Park Point Trail was created by the WPA in the 1930s. The park features a boat launch, volley ball courts, a beach, and a picnic area; the trail leads two miles to the tip of Park Point and back. This is a wonderful place to enjoy a picnic while you are staying at our bed and breakfast Duluth. While on the hike, look for remnants of old growth forest and old cabins built by early settlers. Be sure to bring binoculars if you enjoy birdwatching, for it is one of the best spots for seeing birds in the area. (more…)

Mariners love it because it is thrilling and fun to race. Land lubbers love it because it is pretty. Our Duluth bed and breakfast affords wonderful views of the races. Join us some Wednesday evening and see for yourself.

It's hard to find a better view of the Wednesday evening sailboat races on Lake Superior.

Ski Duluth

Tuesday, February 16th, 2010

If you have never been to Duluth, you may not know that it is possible to ski right smack in the middle of the city. In fact, Spirit Mountain is just minutes from our Duluth inn. Enjoy the best of both worlds when you stay with us and ski at Spirit: walk along the frosty beach at dawn and dusk, and hit the slopes during the day.

Lighthouse and Ice

When the lake looks like this, it is time to bring your skis to Duluth

The mountain is open from 9am to 8pm Sunday through Thursday, and stays open an additional hour on Fridays and Saturdays. Hours will be shorter toward the end of March, when the season starts to wind down, so come ski in Duluth now.

There are 22 downhill ski runs on Spirit Mountain; with five chairlifts, one rope tow, one handle tow and one ski carpet, the mountain is easy to negotiate and never feels too crowded. In addition, 22 kilometers of trails are available for cross-country skiing, and they are groomed for both classic and skate skiing.

So grab your skis and head to our Duluth lodging on Lake Superior. Enjoy fantastic views of Lake Superior and St. Louis Bay while you are up on the slopes, and take in intimate views of the lake from our inn.

Stay here during the Two Harbors Kayak Festival

Stay here during the Two Harbors Kayak Festival

The Aerial Bridge Suite at our Lake Superior Bed and Breakfast is still available during the Two Harbors Kayak Festival, which runs August 7 – 9, 2009. Kayaking enthusiasts from all over the country and the world attend this event, now in its twelfth year. There is something for every paddler during this weekend, from classes for novices to advanced clinics. And of course, there are the races.

More than one record has been set during the 18 Mile Great River Energy (GRE) Kayak Marathon over the years. But don’t let that intimidate you or keep you away from all the fun. If you don’t feel up to paddling 18 miles, consider participating in the EMMA Challenge Tandem Sprint Racing, on Sunday August 9th. Teams consist of everything from two adult men to two big kids. In short, times will widely vary, and the point is to paddle your heart out and have fun.

Two Harbors is less than 30 miles up the coast of Lake Superior from our Duluth MN Bed and Breakfast – a piece of cake for long-distance paddlers, and an even easier drive. We promise to provide you with a tasty and filling breakfast made from as many local ingredients as we can find. Early August is a good time for berries, so bring your appetite as well as your kayak. We look forward to hosting you.

Sunset Kayaking at Jim Hall Lake

Sunset in a kayak

There are many perks to living on Lake Superior. We watch huge ships go by, looking like floating islands. We are lulled to sleep by the sound of water gently lapping on shore. Seabirds abound, waking us in the morning with their enthusiastic calls. Sunrises and sunsets are amazing to behold from our home at this Duluth Minnesota inn. (more…)
